Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioners Workshop

  • Australian National Maritime Museum 2 Murray Street Sydney NSW 2000 Australia (map)

AMBS Ecology & Heritage would like to invite everyone to attend the 21st Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioner’s (SHAP) workshop on Friday 17 May 2024 at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

It is a chance to hear from terrestrial and maritime heritage professionals, students and academics on the latest archaeological sites and research in Sydney.

SHAP 2024 Theme: Change and influence

New South Wales was a colony that depended heavily on its maritime links. This year’s SHAP focuses on the colony’s connections and breaks with the wider worlds of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Distance, technology, trade, migration, and the Australian landscape all influenced whether it was continuity or change that prevailed in the colony. From the vernacular architecture of worker’s houses, to butchery practices, boatbuilding and lunacy law, what came from across the sea either forcibly shaped or was forever transformed by its remote destination.

A full programme will be available closer to the date.

Doors open at 8.15 with coffee and tea available. Morning tea and Lunch will be provided at the museum. Please indicate any dietary requirements in your registration.

Bake It! As part of SHAP 2024, AMBS will host the annual Bake It! competition. Bake a creation inspired by archaeology or the 2024 theme ‘change and influence’. For details and ideas, download the poster here.

As with all coming-of-age celebrations a speech will be made before the day concludes at the Terminus Hotel Pyrmont, a short walk from the museum. A complimentary drink voucher will be provided.

The call for submissions has been extended to Friday 10 May 2024. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words. Please specify the length of your paper (5, 15, or 20 minutes). Submissions to be sent via email to Lian@AMBS.com.au
