Geelong Archaeology Festival

  • Barwon Grange 25 Fernleigh Street Newtown Vic 3220 Australia (map)

The Geelong Archaeology Festival presents a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to become immersed in the exciting discipline of archaeology.

During your session, you will work together with your Dig Team to uncover and analyse artefacts in our simulated archaeological site linked to Westbourne Villa.

The Festival presents a unique opportunity for students, teachers and the public to get hands-on experience linked to a real archaeological site and to then tour a standing equivalent next door at Barwon Grange. Visitors will explore artefacts from the 1997 excavation, 3D modelling, participate in ground-penetrating radar research, and meet practicing National Trust archaeologists.

About the site: Built in 1854, Westbourne Villa was one of several luxury riverside villas along the Parwan (Barwon River) in South Geelong, Victoria. Suffering irreparable fire damage in the 1960s, it is now evident only as a raised grassed mound and was partially excavated in 1997.

The Geelong Archaeology Festival is presented by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) in conjunction with the Australian Archaeological Association.
